If you’ve already fitted aftermarket captive wheel spacers to your motorcycle’s original OEM wheels, you may be wondering whether you can continue using them with an L74 rear quick release kit.
Captive wheel spacer compatibility depends largely on the design and outside diameter of your existing spacers. The critical factor is whether they will work correctly with the L74 wheel support system.
Many aftermarket captive wheel spacers are designed for endurance racing and feature a mushroom-shaped profile, with a larger outside diameter to help guide the wheel into position.
While these spacers may work perfectly well with a conventional rear wheel setup, their larger diameter can cause compatibility issues with an L74 quick release kit.
The L74 system uses wheel support brackets that are designed around the dimensions of the motorcycle’s original OEM wheel spacers.
If your existing captive spacers have a larger outside diameter than the OEM spacers, they may not locate correctly on these supports.
The critical measurement is the outside diameter of the spacer where it sits on the L74 wheel support bracket.
Ideally, this should match the outside diameter of the original OEM wheel spacer.
A smaller outside diameter can also work, although matching the OEM dimensions is preferable.
If your aftermarket captive spacers have a larger outside diameter than the original OEM spacers, they will not be suitable for use with the L74 wheel supports without modification.
Every L74 rear quick release kit comes complete with one set of captive wheel spacers, designed to work with your motorcycle’s original OEM wheels and the L74 wheel support system.
This means that even if your existing aftermarket captive spacers aren’t compatible, you won’t need to purchase another set for your main rear wheel.
You would only need additional captive spacers if you have extra sets of wheels, for example, a second rear wheel fitted with wet/rain tyres or intermediate tyres for changing track conditions.
Having a set of compatible captive spacers fitted to each rear wheel means they’re all ready to use with your L74 quick release system, making wheel changes quicker and easier when conditions change.
If you’re unsure whether your existing captive spacers will work, please contact us with your motorcycle model and details or photographs of the spacers you have fitted.
We’ll be happy to advise before you order.
If you have multiple sets of rear wheels for different tyre conditions, having captive spacers fitted to each wheel makes swapping between them much quicker and easier.
L74 offers a range of captive rear wheel spacers for different motorcycle makes and models, designed to work with our rear quick release systems.
Whether you’re preparing a spare wheel with wet tyres, intermediates or simply want an additional set, you can browse our range of captive spacers in the L74 online shop.

In summary: Existing aftermarket captive spacers can work with an L74 rear quick release kit, provided their outside diameter is the same as or smaller than the original OEM spacers. Matching the OEM diameter is preferable. Larger mushroom-style endurance spacers are generally unsuitable, but every L74 kit includes a compatible set for your original wheels.
